Why there are two

The same advice does not fit everyone.

Somebody in their fifties with a paid off house and a business to sell has very little in common with a resident who owes three hundred thousand dollars and works sixty five hours a week. They need different questions, and they need different answers. So we built two tools rather than one that tries to serve both of them badly.

Each one asks you a set of plain questions and then shows you your own numbers. Every number has a small question mark beside it. Press it and you will see the arithmetic written out, using the figures you gave. You can print what you get on a single page, and you can send it to the person you share your life with.

This one is about money. It was written for physicians and it works for anyone who earns well. You answer questions about your career so far, about a normal month, about what you own, and about what you have protected. Then it gives you your vitals, a name for where you stand today, and three things worth doing next.

One of those three is marked as the place to start this week, so you are never left with a list and no idea which end to pick up. It also works out the amount of money that would make work optional for you, and the age you would reach it if nothing changes.

This one is about time. It is written for medical and dental students, for residents, and for the first few years in practice. At this stage most people have very little money and a great many years ahead of them, so it begins with what one hour of your life is worth rather than with a balance you do not have yet.

From there it looks at your loans, your hours, and the decisions sitting in front of you. It ends with a letter you write to the doctor you are about to become. That letter stays on your own device and prints on your page, and nobody else ever sees it.

Both tools run inside your web browser and nowhere else. There is no account to create and no password to remember. This site carries no tracking of any kind, so nothing you type is sent anywhere while you are working through the questions, and nothing is sent when you finish either.

If you ask us to email your page at the end, then your first name, your email address, and a link holding your answers come to us, so that we can send that page back to you. That is the only time anything leaves your computer, and it only happens because you asked for it.
